Working my PRN gig this afternoon. Guy tried to hang himself about 15 feet from my window. I didn't even notice, until the cops pulled up with their lights on...Just another day at work...

Yep. The gal working the back door, taking temps and logging people in, happened to notice him as he was dragging a planter over. When he started to climb up and hook his belt over the support, she called the ED crew for help. They got him down.
The guy was mental and apparently known to the cops, since they hauled him off (to jail?). I didn't even know what was going on, until a cruiser parked outside the window (lab is on the back of the hospital next to the ED) with his lights on and one of the nurses stuck her head in the back door and told us.

Nasty way to go. First autopsy I ever worked, was a guy who hanged himself with a bed sheet.
Old Dr. Tom took a look at him on the table, sipped his coffee and said, "I bet he had second thoughts before he passed out".
Doc was known for a studious manner and habitual understatement.

From what I understand (which is very little), the key to make death by hanging as painless as possible is to fall from considerable height.

Brings to mind Robin Williams. All he had to do to survive is stand up. Just stand up.

Need to break the neck.
