My kid’s birth cost $10,300 in 1994 in an upscale Alabama Hospital. I still remember that bill which came later. Rapid C-section. 2 anesthetists. I left 24 hrs post delivery (because I wanted to). Blue Cross paid for almost all of it. I had 2 meals on fancy china. The hospital room had really nice wall paper and bed linen. They gave us our car seat and a huge amount of supplies we needed a dolly for to move out to the car. Quite the contrast from Canada.

Our first was in Canada, the second in the US. The Canadian one consisted of about 18 hours of the OB-GYN sulking and arguing with Mrs. Phibes because we'd used a midwife, including him leaving the hospital in a bit of a huff and having to be repeatedly paged. Eventually his replacement had to perform a c-section. Not exactly a stress-free experience, to put it mildly.
The second one (planned c-section this time) in the US had an all-you-can eat breakfast buffet right there on the ward, which I was allowed to eat.

@Doctor-Phibes .. There was a reason we planned that pregnancy for the US
… #1 I wanted that epidural from the get go .. not an option in Canada. #2 I wanted a fully (aka board) certified Obstetrician as my doctor throughout my pregnancy & immediately post and no one else, also a Pediatrician post .. again not possible here. I wanted choice choosing who those doctors would be too .. LOL, no choice here. #3 I hoped for a C-Section and just knew that could be easier to ‘arrange’ in the U.S. #4 I was well over 30 and wanted easy access to any and every prenatal genetic/diagnostic screening method available … again, not possible here. #5 I needed reassurance there’d be top tier NICU services available if need be without the staffing/funding/capacity Canadian B.S. I well knew working in that system.
