Derrick Harmon was a blue chip recruit coming out of HS, but he decided to go to Michigan State to stay close to his mother. While he was a freshman, she had a major stroke, so he transferred to Oregon to get an NIL deal large enough to support the family and cover her medical bills as well as a wheelchair accessible van.
Last night, he broke down in tears during his press conference and cut it short because he needed to go to the hospital and tell his mom he was drafted (she was having brain surgery).
She passed 2 hours after he told her.
