How a Tug Boat works

I was listening to something with my kid yesterday about tug boats being able to pull ships 1,000x bigger than them and was curious how it works.
Interesting about how it generates the power, also why it doesn't flip up when pulling, how the ropes are attached, and what happens if they need to cut the rope in an emergency.
