    @George-K

    Seems to me counting them is ok if, under previous policy, they would have been let in pending an asylum hearing. If not then it seems like cheating.

      But, but, but, I was told that President Trump shut down the border during his first term.

        https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/donald-trump-immigration-ice/2025/02/03/id/1197607/

        Some immigrants arrested last week have been released back into the U.S. on a monitoring program due to space constraints and court orders, reported NBC News.

        The report comes as President Donald Trump is set to test the limits of his immigration crackdown by invoking a wartime law to deport immigrants alleged to be gang members without court hearings, a broad authority that could supercharge his mass deportation push and potentially sweep in people not charged with crimes.

          @taiwan_girl He tried his damndest, and he had some success. If the Dems would have worked with him, he would have done even better.

          Or did you not remember that part?

            @Jolly I just presented the above with no comment. 😛

            I have mentioned here many times here that I am in favor of increased legal immigration but am not a fan of illegal immigration.

            Ive also said I am pretty sure that the vast majority of illegal immigrants here in the US came here for economic reasons.

              IIRC, Eisenhower brought in a general to address deportations and border control...

              Thanks to that general, we have the immigration problems we have today with the southern border.

              Please love yourself.

                  He didn't understand the difference between the kinds of illegal immigrants we had. A great many of them hopped the border, worked here for a bit, then hopped back home. There was a constant back-and-forth. We liked the cheap labor, they liked the pay, and no it wasn't drug-related. Then there were the nefarious immigrants, the ones looking to have anchor babies, etc.

                  By treating them all the same, he changed the risk calculation for the returners. Now it made sense for everybody to jump the border and try to stay. It didn't act as a deterrent, it just flooded the demand.

                  Please love yourself.

                    Interesting. Not a perspective I’d heard before

                      Well, he didn't last long. LOL

                      Caleb Vitello, the acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is being reassigned amid internal frustrations over the agency's progress in carrying out President Trump's mass deportation goals, administration officials told CBS News on Friday.
