Trended up as soon as Nixon killed the gold standard.

It's not quite as bad if you consider them in relation to interest rates.

But it seems like we will never again see interest rates of 5%. Most countries would be immediately broke.

The main miracle is why we don't see rampant inflation yet.

Regarding Jon's chart, what do you think we (the US) will do about this? What will be the outcome of this upsurge, for us and for the world?

The upsurge being due to the stimulus checks, recipients will get that money back out working in the economy, no? Will that have some sort of effect on what happens?

My guess is we’ll ultimately we’ll not pay it back or pay it back with heavily devalued dollars.

                  We?

That is the generic, our great-great-greats, we, right?

It's worth commenting that the chart maker made a choice of axis gridlines in a way to make this look really dramatic.

Also it's not normalized to GDP. If you do that, it doesn't look quite as scary.

Still it's concerning. We were approaching WW2 levels of debt even before the pandemic, when the economy was humming along.

This is one of my main disappointments with Trump. I expected he would find ways to cut spending. The opposite is true.
