How to stack your burgers

Downside of lettuce on the bottom is it makes the meat slipperier. Adults can typically manage this ok - hopeless endeavor for kids.
I do the pickles and onions on the bottom. I like the friction between the meat and bun to lock those in place so they don't bunch up. I've been making burgers every Friday for the last 4 years, so I may be slightly over-thinking this.

No one in my house except for me likes tomatoes on their burger - it's a source of discontent in my life.
As well it should be.
Especially in kids, palates have really narrowed. Elementary kids would not eat what I was served for school lunch.

I find the tomato to be the slippery culprit. I usually stick with lettuce, onion, and pickle, and ketchup/mustard. I'll have to try the lettuce (and tomato) under the patty to see how that works. I wonder which method will allow you to enjoy the actual meat flavor the most...
