It’s not quite my dream of starting a 1950’s rock cover band, but in some ways it’s not that far off…

I’m going to be playing Bari Sax in a big band… They promised to give me a few months before playing Sophisticated Lady…

That sounds fun. I didn't know you played sax. I still can't wrap my head around how you can be so completely deaf towards classical piano interpretations, and be a talented musician, which I trust you are.

      Education is extremely important.

        That's just way cool.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

@LuFins-Dad Very cool! The saxophone (of any kind) is an instrument I wish I would have learned.

Nice! Have you played the bari before? I've never gone bigger than tenor (I'm 5 ft seven so it might look a bit comical), but had some fun playing alto-baritone jazzy duets with somebody 30-odd years ago.

How does it compare to it's smaller relatives?

                    I was only joking

Yeah, back when I used to play for real, Bari was kind of my hook. I also played alto/tenor, and preferred alto to tenor (I was never pleased with my tenor tone), but Bari along with bass clarinet was my base… That got me gigs that would have been far more competitive if I was shooting for the alto or tenor parts.

Back in those days I did some pit orchestra work, so there would have to be 3-4 woodwind players that would mix and match. Most shows I was on Bari, Bass Clarinet, 2nd Alto, 2nd Clarinet, and 2nd Tenor (though sometimes I would play the tenor part on bass clarinet to make for easier switches).

Then I discovered that I could make more money and get free drinks playing the sax lick from Turn the Page in classic rock bands…

I had my first rehearsal with these guys tonight. It sounded pretty damn good. We’re doing more of the college level charts, but doing them well. Great balance, good tone, and solid syncopation. I’m glad to say that I held my own. Apparently they were 2 years without a Bari, and the last one wasn’t very good, so I felt appreciated. It was a good evening…

Cool. I was an alto sax guy for the most part but I would occasionally play tenor or baritone in jazz band. Once I even played soprano.

Proof... Not the greatest, but it sounded better to me live than on the recording... And for some reason both the alto and trumpet jut completely mailed it in on their solos. They are normally better.

If you look in the background on the right, you'll see Finley and Karla playing in the library room of the coffee house...
