    Interesting that they measured balance eyes open and closed. I have noticed that my balance is much more dependent on visuals than it used to be.

      We used to do a lot of balance exercises I pulmonary rehab. Repeating the exercise with your eyes closed was always the last, hardest one.

                Particularly for the nondominant leg, what you see here is a pretty dramatic drop-off in balance time around age 65, with younger people able to do 10 seconds with ease and some older people barely being able to make it to 2.

                I am 70

                I can stand on either leg, almost forever. I used to practice this as part of the daily workout, now just occasionally.

                  Like Copper, I can stand on either leg by itself indefinitely, even with a nagging ACL issue that affects my left knee joint. But then I practice Tai Chi on an almost daily basis.

                        I suffered an achilles tendon injury when I was 24 on the left side.I never thought much of it until I had a neuro exam by my PCP about 5 months ago. I can't walk tiptoe because of weakness in my left calf. Neuro workup was negative (MRI, etc). I imagine that might be the explanation for why I had difficulty mounting a horse from the ground. Admittedly, I never tried it from the off-side.

                        Anyhow, I just tried standing on one foot. On the left, I was able to do about 7 seconds. On the right, I quit after 25 because, like @bachophile I got bored.
