I don’t think it was so much the settlers as it was infectious disease and cheap whisky and rum.
In any case though I think the Natives tended to fair somewhat better under the French as overlords than any of the other European powers.

Except for Leif Erikson. Instead of the Native American brinksmanship and in-fighting or the European slave trade, all he wanted to do in North America was get wasted.
And still he gets left out. Our values suck.
