I mentioned briefly in the Helene thread that we had plans to stay at the beach near Tampa Florida (in the Clearwater area) next month but had to change to the Atlantic side after our AirBnB flooded with 6’ of storm surge…poor town is cleaning up now, but in a few days, another Hurricane is coming…

That's right over my house (slightly NE of Orlando.) That being said, a 1ish, 2ish really isn't all that bad...branches down, this and that flying around. I live on a lake (William F. Buckley said, "A good house should be situated on either a road, a rock or a body of water") --which can be an issue if the wind comes over from the west, but otherwise I'm in some deep cover from trees and other peoples sacrificial houses. And as far as the rain goes even on the lake it's not much of an issue because for reasons of sheer luck (tho' some might say prescient genius) I'm 15' above the lake hight. And with Florida being a flat state the enirity of Central Florida will have to get flooded before anything of mine goes underwater. Though I might be wrong about everything I say. Anyway no matter how bad, a hurricane is a damn sight better than having some psychopath ayatollah shooting rockets over my head.

I’m in Orlando, but I’ll be home well ahead of the storm.

@Tom-K Stay safe brother, I think you'll be ok. The hurricane coming from the west probably does mix things up a bit since everything is probably built expecting storms from the east or south.

My wife and I are almost cursed in this regard. Our first anniversary? Blue ridge mountains... ended up with FOG. 2nd Anniversary, went to VA Beach, rode out Hurricane Matthew (cat 1), which was not pleasant, as our hotel room was leaking from the ceiling so we had to switch hotels mid-hurricane. Even a cat 1... the relentless wind/rain for 12 hours (especially overnight) really makes you yearn for watching the hurricane bounce back out to sea. Another anniversary trip... Kiawah Island, SC... COVID hit and the company had to cancel out reservations even though I pleaded that being isolated in a beach house was THE best way to handle COVID... then Clearwater reservations, 2 hurricanes, and now that we've re-booked for the Atlantic side, expect a hurricane early November, I guess?

We are leaving Orlando this afternoon, we won’t be alone.

My daughter was planning a Wednesday departure, now moved to tomorrow. This will cost Disney some money.

Water will help vegetation. The wind damage will create lots of job opportunities for our nation's construction workers and scam artists (but I repeat myself).

Are these storms way more common this year or am I just paying more attention?

Will the Miami Hurricanes have to change their name? I find it highly insensitive.
