Nah, I think it's a pre-emptive strike.
There are problems with mail-in ballots and we all know it. They are extremely easy to manipulate and ballot harvest. They also lend themselves to an October Surprise, if it's done well, especially with a Biden-friendly media.
As for poll numbers...I think Trump is down about five, but it's not even Labor Day. And the more Biden has to campaign, the more his senility is expressed.

One of the more insidious aspects of our learned righteousness is that compassion is for the least advantaged materially, and the bulk of the bell curve can go F itself. Entire societies can apparently be led by attaching the leash to the tail of the bell curve and shaming everybody for not devoting all their attention to it, hang the expense.
Education is extremely important.

I don't see that as a risk in 2020. The bigger risk is Trump-friendly state governments attempting to invalidate whole classes of votes, putting up a competing slate of electors, or just never sending any, in order to throw the election into the house.
(note that an election in the house probably goes to Trump, because it isn't a straight vote of representatives, it's a vote by state delegation)

It's weird how you fail to mention that some Democrat electors tried this in 2016 as a last ditch righteous attempt to keep Trump out of office.

Biden is a centrist. The only question is his effectiveness and ability to lead.
Even Obama who tried to push through some progressive ideas early on received the feedback of losing the House, The Senate and Governorships in that order. At the end of the day Obama looked pretty similar to Bill Clinton and the Republic did well enough.

Well I’ll throw some cold water on trumps stupidity.
In the impossible situation where federal law is changed and the election is delayed. The constitution rules that the presidents term ends January 20. If there is no president elect, than (sit down larry) pelosi becomes president.
In cases where there is no president-elect or vice president-elect, the amendment also gives the Congress the authority to declare an acting president until such time as there is a president or vice president. At this point the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 would apply, with the office of the Presidency going to the speaker of the House of Representatives, followed by the president pro tempore of the Senate and various Cabinet officers.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That(a)

Eons ago I redd a novel by Fletcher Knebel called (I think) Dark Horse. The premise: through some bizarre circumstance all those in the line of succession are killed, and the job goes (somehow, I don't remember how) to the New Jersey Commissioner of Highways. The rest of the book is about how this guy copes. It was pretty good actually.
I'd like to read it again, but I think it's out of print.
