The question is the opportunity cost. I doubt any checks were written from a general fund. What would the coast guardians have been doing instead?

    Saving lives?

I hope no lives were lost to the absence of coast guard resources during this salvage operation. For practical purposes, I guess the coast guard was happy for the free marketing about the cool stuff they do.

      Education is extremely important.

I'm all in favor of billionaires going diving in sight-seeing submarines, as long as they name me next-of-kin.

I guess there must be a market for very rich people to do very dangerous things.

The flavor of boredom felt by a person who can have anything money can buy, might feel existential.

"Let me show you it's safe" is one of the great ironic phrases throughout history.

                    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/

These are five key questions that still need to be answered.

Did the passengers know the dive was going wrong?

Which part of the Titan sub failed?

Did ocean sounds distract from the search?

Why were safety concerns ignored by Oceangate?

Why did the authorities allow Titan to dive?

The sonobuoys are going to pick up any unnatural pattern. They're designed to find the quietest subs in the world.
