Something that sucks about Karla’s work…

Some of her clients become a part of our family…
One of the first dogs that Karla started to take care of was a pair of sisters,
Lucy
and Zoey
They started boarding with us over 10 years ago and would come to stay for a week or two, maybe three times a year. Lucy was absolutely a show dog. She could have been a model for Yorkies in a magazine. Zoey, on the other hand, looked and acted like a crazy cat lady. She would jump onto the back of the couch and bat your nose or nip at your ears to get you to play. Lucy just wanted affection.
They’re both getting older and are/were staying with us this week. Lucy got sick yesterday (she’s been suffering from repeated pancreatitis) and Karla took her to her vet. The parents were in town and went to the vets, too (we were boarding them while he was recovering from a surgery). They decided it was time for her…
It’s almost like losing one of our own dogs…

I've lost a pup to pancreatitis. A little sheltie, tougher than woodpecker lips.
At the end, she hurt. Had to have her put down at the emergency vet in the early hours one Saturday morning. Cost me several hundred dollars.
Best money I ever spent.
You know, sometimes you just gotta do, what you gotta do. Y'all know that. The pup's owners know that, too. Knowing doesn't make it any easier, though...

Yeah, it was the right call, but I suspect that this will hasten the end for Zoey. She has diabetes and is half blind. Without her sister…

There are vets that will come to your house and euthanize your pet. We considered that with Oliver, just to avoid the stress of a car ride. However, once we made that decision, he had already lost consciousness and we brought him to the vet in a basket where it was completed.
However, before he fell asleep, he never really suffered. Just incontinent of stool and urine (yeah, we diapered him) for about a year. Then, one day...sleep.

Is that the Rainbow Bridge or something service? My friend had that for her pug... made it a little easier to know when/where it was time for the end.
Sorry @LuFins-Dad , pets are innocent and (mostly) only want affection or attention. It's why it's so hard to say goodbye, to a pure friend.
Our neighbor found their German Shepherd had bone cancer and even if they spent $5k, it might buy another 6 months of (painful) life. Sometimes the decisions are made for you... but as @Jolly said it doesn't make it easier.

I have two graveyards. Literally.
There are very few things I truly regret in life. My best friend died before his dog died. J.J. Was the smartest dog I've ever been around. I've told several J.J. stories over the years.
My friend's son took care of J.J., But the dog never got the care or love he deserved after my friend died. Chad called us to come over the evening he found J.J. dead, curled up on the back porch. The wife and I dropped by to see that old dog for one last time. I was five or six weeks post-op, with a couple of titanium plates wired in my chest, but if I'd known Chad was just going to pitch that dog's body out in the woods, I'd have dug that grave with a teaspoon.
J.J. deserved better.
Old dogs get next to you. They're like family. Sad to say, sometimes closer than some family. It's a black day when one dies. A black day.
