Based on a play, the studio cast a trio of talent into the lead roles, helping to rocket one of the three into a Hollywood legend. Many years later, the movie was remade, in order to rekindle that legend's career and to create a new Hollywood legend.
The two movies had essentially the same plots, but were set in different locations.
What was the name of the two movies? What actor appeared in both?

With help from a friend, i am going to guess "Minnesota Fats" the movie (not sure if that was the actual title).
Paul Newman

Think older. Hint...
There is a very famous scene in the first movie, where one of the female stars of the picture is taking a bath. After delivering her line, she stood up in the bathtub and said, "Here's one for the boys in the film room!" At least she had bottoms on...BTW, that section of film was destroyed by the studio...
-
Remember...The actor who appeared in both movies was a major star.
Hint...The two movies were made just over 20 years apart.
Next hint...One of the movies featured a score with no European or American music...Except for one song, partially sung by one of the female leads.

Cats, you provided the link!
It’s Red Dust and Mogambo, starting Clark Gable.
Gee, took you long enough.
Seriously, the studio decided to redo Red Dust, except the location was changed to Africa. Gable reprised his role and Ava Gardner took the Harlow role.
