Obviously I’ve done this stuff before, but the guy in question tends to take things very personally. He more than had it coming, but I still don’t enjoy it.

I bet. It’s one of my least favorite aspects of management. I’d rather to be the guy getting the dressing down. Then I can pull out belligerent and see if I can back the guy down.

It’s been many years since I gave a flying fuck about getting fired. 😄

If he wasn’t quieter, then I would be worried he didn’t fake it seriously. Not that the chatting was the issue, but the guy should be more introspective given the circumstances.

In all seriousness, let me give you a piece of advice...

It's not the people you fire that keep you up at night. It's the ones you should have fired and didn't.

It's no biggie, I was just venting. I'm sure most of us have been through a lot worse on a regular occasion.

Something else he hasn't figured out is that he shouldn't confide in the guy I go for my lunchtime walk with pretty much every day 😁

If you can/care, can you share the reasons for dismissal?

When our group shrank, we had to let 3 guys go at once. I wasn't there for the talk.

However, when we had to fire one for performance issues, I was there (and voted). It was rough, indeed.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

                          Oh, this wasn't a firing, just a little pep-talk.

What was funny was just how quiet the office was all afternoon. I'm quite interested to see how tomorrow goes.

Fear is the beginning of respect.

I'm not talking about irrational fear or dread, just the acknowledgement that the boss does have the authority to bring the hammer and will do so if it has to be.

I’ve fired a few people over the years and the one that really depressed me was because I wanted to take him out back and shoot him so he wouldn’t go to work somewhere else. He earned it.

I suspect the silence wasn't fear as much as sulking.
