Now I feel like crap....

Nothing major, but I had to have a word with somebody this morning. He's a really great guy, but not exactly the hardest working bloke in the building. He loves to chat, and he loves to wander.
The office is noticeably quieter than normal this afternoon, and for some stupid reason I now feel really guilty.
I don't think I'm cut out for this job

A man's gotta do wht he's gotta do. That's what you had to do. Don't let the guilt make you try to make it up to him. he needs to be productive.
-
You are The Man.
-
That was cold, Jon.

It's not clear to me his behavior is contrary to that.

The discussion wasn't actually about his chatting and wandering, it was about his productivity.
The office is still as silent as the grave.
I'm wondering whether I'll get the sick day call-in tomorrow.

Well, that's legit.

I'm sure everything might be fine.
Seriously, though, I think Mik's right. You're management, he's labor. Ain't no way to reconcile that so might as well just try to be cool, do what you have to do and don't worry about whatever he thinks.

Pretend you have just developed Tourette's - "you suck!!" "move it, a...hole"
-
I’m sure it was clear that you didn’t want to have to deliver that message. A relaxed environment only works until folks take it a bit too far.
It might be a little awkward for a few days, but it’s good for people to know where the line is.
-
Obviously I’ve done this stuff before, but the guy in question tends to take things very personally. He more than had it coming, but I still don’t enjoy it.
-
I bet. It’s one of my least favorite aspects of management. I’d rather to be the guy getting the dressing down. Then I can pull out belligerent and see if I can back the guy down.
It’s been many years since I gave a flying fuck about getting fired.

Want a friend?
Buy a dog.

If he wasn’t quieter, then I would be worried he didn’t fake it seriously. Not that the chatting was the issue, but the guy should be more introspective given the circumstances.
-
In all seriousness, let me give you a piece of advice...
It's not the people you fire that keep you up at night. It's the ones you should have fired and didn't.
-
Sorry you’re going through this. Hopefully it’ll blow over.
-
If it’s any consolation, he’s having a worse day…
