No, just the swine… And the whiskey, too.

      This speech is pretty lackluster.

Yep, he's treating it more like a campaign rally. With the right speech, he could have clinched this election.

This is not the right speech...

No. It wasn’t even a speech and looked like he put no effort whatsoever into it.

No. It wasn’t even a speech and looked like he put no effort whatsoever into it.

I disagree in part. The early part of the speech was fairly scripted and effective, as he was talking about the assassination attempt and being President of all Americans. Then, he got off script, off the rails in an adlib campaign -type talk, trying to tone down the personal attack stuff, but wandering through the issues while calling out people in the crowd and interjecting little personal thank-yous. I know he was trying to hammer certain themes such as illegal immigration, but he would work on one subject, move to another and then circle back. At the very end of the speech he finally focused back in and humbly asked for the votes of all Americans.

He could have done better and said what he needed to say in 30-40 minutes.

“Cry havoc and let slip the DOGE of war!”

A guy like Trump is going to have one style when he’s talking to a bunch of fans and should have another when he’s trying to reach a broader audience. While this should have been the latter, I suspect he was driven by habit and by the people in the room to shift into the former. From the reporting I saw it sounded like he started off with a speech and went into Trump Rally mode after a half hour or so.

Maybe he just loves the sound of his own voice. He rambles on about all kinds of bullshit as though everybody should be riveted by his thoughts on any number of topics. He reminds me of me after I've had a certain quantity of alcohol. Obviously, my wife tells me to STFU and does everybody a favour. He doesn't have anybody like that, presumably.

The thing is he's not a good speaker, although I'm sure he thinks he is. It was a droning, unoriginal, lazy waste of time. He said nothing surprising or revelatory or even seriously emotional about the shooting and offered up nothing we haven't heard before about platform.

He's in his 70's and does a lot of rallies. Habits are very hard to break at that age.

A blogger comments on the length of the speech.

I noticed in his speech, he gets annoyed having to read other people's written lines, so after every line he reads from the teleprompter, he then offers asides and digressions to add his personal flava to it.

Like he read: "From Yorktown, to Antietam, to Midway, brave Americans have joined the roll call of immortal heroes."

And that's obviously not Trump's way of speaking.

Then he turns to the audience and freestyles it: "These heroes, these heroes. So many heroes, so many. We need to cherish them. We need to cherish these heroes. Did you ever notice that? No one says 'cherish these heroes' any longer, no one says that. We need to build statues. Beautiful statues. I love the flag."

Then he goes back to the script for a line.

That's why it was so long -- the script itself was about 45 minutes long, and then his asides were just as long.

In both the debate and the convention, all he had to do to secure a win was to exercise a little discipline and act presidential. He couldn't do it.

Oh, I think he won the debate, hands down. The debate is what broke the media silence on Biden and what will lead to his ouster. Either voluntarily or through the 25th Amendment.

I don't think he won the debate but squandered a golden opportunity. No one won that mess.

The fallout for the Biden campaign just shows his party's values, or lack thereof.

The thing is he's not a good speaker, although I'm sure he thinks he is. It was a droning, unoriginal, lazy waste of time. He said nothing surprising or revelatory or even seriously emotional about the shooting and offered up nothing we haven't heard before about platform.

+1, and even when he’s trying to commend others, it comes across as self aggrandizing.
