Apparently that was Vance’s birth name.

And ~~Bowman~~ Vance has a son named Vivek.

So he was born James Donald Bowman (Donald!).

Then when he was 6 he became James David Hamel.

Then later (after 12?) he became James David Vance (his mother's maiden name).
