I really thought there was a strategy behind why Biden wanted to debate Trump early (and if at all). I would pay good money to know what they (or Jill?) was thinking. Before that, many of us figured Biden would dodge the debates completely as they were nothing but a liability.

Buoyed by his state of the union speech earlier this year, they thought he was up to it. But we see that he can pretend to be a functional adult while reading from a teleprompter, but cannot pretend to be functional when thinking extemporaneously. I think it was a simple mistake, a lack of good judgment, that his handlers put him up there. But we also have to allow for the possibility that Biden does have some autonomy, and demanded to do the debate. He's probably far gone enough to believe in his own intellectual abilities.
