    https://www.yahoo.com/news/york-ban-phones-city-classrooms-123713782.html

Until recently I presumed phones were not allowed during school hours. I learned in most places kids can have them (and turned on) but it’s up to each teacher to decide their own classroom policy.

What gets me, and I hate pulling this card as I’ve only just started to phase into cranky old man mode… but it’s this line:

In a bid to ease fears of parents being unable to contact their children, Mr Banks said the new rules would allow devices in school grounds but their use would not be permitted during school hours.

“We want you to be able to bring your phone to school because the minute that school is over, you need to be in communication with your family,” he said.

Ok so WTF. How do they think kids survived high school just 20 years ago?

I don’t know about y’all, but school was the great escape away from my parents. I presumed my kid felt the same.

        Mass shootings.

“Cry havoc and let slip the DOGE of war!”

Those who cheered as J-6 American prisoners were locked in solitary for 18 months without trial, now suddenly fight tooth and nail for foreign terrorists’ "due process". — Buck Sexton

By living in a society which wasn't structured around the assumption that everybody has cellphones?

          I was only joking

I felt like my home-life was the great escape away from school 😬

I don't buy it. Maybe the mentality is there, but statistically you're 100x more likely to get hurt driving to school that IN school, including shootings.

              They are UBER rare.

I suppose. I'm playing dumb (easy, I know), there is an expectation of instant information, instance replies, that exists today. I guess I'm sad that things have to move so fast. When I went to school if I needed a ride home I would use the pay phone. And if I had to wait, I'd wait... 30 minutes, 60... or I'd walk home (3 miles I think?). And I'm a young whippersnapper... imagine what it was like when @Jolly went to school and had to use the Pony Express to request a school ride home.

And I went to the pool today. There were 4 high school girls on lounge chairs, and each of them were staring at their phones. It's like holy shit... No, I didn't take a picture for obvious reasons, but you get the idea. In all seriousness, I guess it's hitting me a bit harder as my kids (ages 6 and under) will inevitable be part of this culture, and there is value lost when folks don't know how to wait, or be self-entertained, or not feel the pressure of needing to reply instantly to communications.

I have not seen any news or read any articles that indicates that a teenager having a phone with them 24/7 is a positive thing.
