I think in general we can agree on the very general idea that we should try to get away from burning fossil fuels (and I'd argue reliance on battery metals like lithium), creating toxic waste, being wasteful in general with plastics (and even food) and try to return our impact on the planet to where it was a few hundred years ago.
But that is hard... a population of 8 billion (it was what, 2 billion just a century ago?) is different than a population in the millions. Instant information, fast travel, increased needs to feed everyone... things just move faster and concerns are easy to write off as temporary, or too big to be impacted by individual actions.
How do we do it? It seems nuclear power is screaming at us. Who knows... the demand for consumer goods, batteries, oil, electricity, and food will only continue to grow...
I always find it funny/sad that something (like oil) that took millions of millions of years to create is used in a few minutes to do something like, drive to the store. Or funnier yet... expiration dates on salt containers, yet the salt itself is millions of years old.

A good test of one's connection to reality, is whether one believes "climate science" departments at universities are entirely politicized now, and whether that politicization affects the results those "scientists" provide to the public. Of course, hearing this thought experiment, a lot of people would consider me detached from reality and a science denier. And that's ok. I'm sure humans have caused warming.

We need to cut the world population by half. We need to embrace the conservation ethos of yesteryear, not the current green silliness we're experiencing. We need to turn away from as much urbanization and get back to small city and town life, with more locally grown food.
We need to invest in less large scale, irrigation-dependent agriculture. We need to take a hard look at the effects of factory farming and look at how we raise slaughter animals in a more land-friendly way.
We need to look at using more rail and shipping, especially combination applications that can combine freight and passengers, when possible.
We need to take a hard look at urban planning, emphasizing neighborhoods that are pedestrian and bike friendly, where people can live, work and shop within neighborhoods. And I'd also like to see a return of trolley service and light rail in bigger cities that don't have subways, and better mass transportation options in small cities.
I think solar and wind power do have a place. Use them to supplement the grid or to create portable power. It's why I think hydrogen is a very interesting concept...Take more energy to make it than it provides, but combine solar or off-shore wind with seawater and maybe we have something to power the ICE of the future.
Nuclear is the future of electricity production. Be nice if fusion ever became a reality.
Lastly, earth's resources are finite. We need to become an interplanetary species, using extraterrestrial resources. That will take some of the best engineering and medical talent we have, as we try to solve the problems that come with living and working in the most inhospitable environs imaginable.

I think we are reaching peak population. The problem is that the last time we were at 4 billion people, the majority of them were young working people.
When we start the world population decline, the population will start to look like an "invert" pyramid, like how China is looking.
That is a problem.

They addressed the freighter fuel issue the guy was telling me about last week.
The lessons here? The climate changes. Always have, always will. Man’s actions do have an effect, and we are morally and ethically bound to be better caretakers of what we have. At the same time, this alarmist crap is just that. The climate is an extremely complicated and enormous system, with numerous failsafes. It will react and change. We will react and change with it.
I still think we need more muclear.
