Full moon, man. Lunar confluence. Today was going to be some shit.
On my end of things, work is going to be stupid today. Everyone's trying to knock off for the weekend, which means they want their things checked off. For some, I'm part of that process. Which means I'm gonna be very busy. Job 2 only complicates things further.
Friends of ours are in a similar boat. The mom is going to have a work day very similar to mine, and the dad has a job interview.
Only problem is, no school today. They have two kids and we's gots the one. Who's going to look after the kids?
We don't have any family nearby, my wife works an hour away and taking a day off for me today isn't really an option. They don't have any family nearby (they're Ukranian and Israeli) and they're pretty busy themselves.
So we called a third family down the street. They have a teenager who can help with the babysitting. She came over here to look after everyone while I'm swearing under my breath in meetings all day. (I can almost justify having everyone here on my own, but not quite. Besides, now we can keep them from staying glued to the damn screens all day and actually have them do things.)
My wife considered this wildly unorthodox problem-solving. Which today, I guess it kind of is. But I grew up doing this kind of thing. I went to quite a few horse fairs, fish hatcheries and who knows what else as a kid—not because it was planned, but because I had to be somewhere and the parents who looked after me had to go, so that's where I was. I suppose they were weird, inconvenient situations for my parents but I loved it.
Nothing nearly so cool is happening today but part of the reason why we moved where we moved is that people still kind of know each other here. There's still at least some sense of community.

I've thought about making an app, actually. For parents to find other parents and do this kind of thing in areas that are more socially standoffish.
But I'm too tired.

To be fair, there's nothing wrong with having a local kid babysit the kiddos... in this area I see posts all the time asking if there are any high school kids in the summer who want a part-time nanny job during work hours.
Zooming out... it's troublesome that it takes two incomes in many places now, which puts at conflict childcare (the cost! but also situations like above with no school). And don't even get me started on the looming debt crisis.

Sadly, that is incredibly accurate about taking your daughter out to the ballpark or airport... I'm a big fan of the handicap stall. Once in a while I will creak open the women's bathroom and ask if it's empty and if it is, I'll hijack it for a few minutes. Sorry not sorry.

We're in a fun position. My wife's going through nursing school. She's still working—for now. She's optimistic she can at least do something part-time as she gets more into it but I'm pretty confident that's an absolute no-go.
So I'm doing the majority of the working but there are people I work with who are right now trying to end my job, and everyone else who does what I do. If we're lucky, we would ride it out until she's done her program and then I can do my Hemingway thing and be annoyingly unemployed, antagonizing the local populace.

Jobs in nursing school? Ward clerk, ER tech, ... Something in the hospital. But keep your eyes on the prize. The goal is to graduate and pass the boards.

Yeah, she's front desk right now, but they want to put her in the back as a med assistant. She's working on getting trained for that now.
She's looking around at hospitals, but if any of that falls through, her current place likes the idea she's in school and is willing to work with her schedule on it, so there are worse situations.
