He looks at water temperature, capacity, ease of fill (does the pour spout spill when you fill the maker?), what solubles are left behind, and other stuff.

He found a big difference in taste based on how much solid is left behind.

Timely! We just bought a new coffee maker. My cheap Mr. Coffee had died. It was always okay, better than a Keurig but not as good as French Press.

So on a lark, I bought one of the self grinding machines from Cuisanart.
      alt text
It was at Costco, so if we don’t like it, we can take it back. It has a couple of interesting controls on it, including brew strength.

We had also ran out of coffee, and they were out of our two favorites, so Karla grabbed a different blend. This turned out to be a light/medium roast and I prefer a darker roast, but I pumped up the strength and I like it okay. We’re getting a bag of the dark roast we like on Thursday, and that will be the test…

As far as the operation, while it’s nice to not have to grind the beans then spoon into the filter, it’s not that much more convenient. You do have to make sure that you are washing and drying the grinding components each time you brew and you need to make sure they are completely dry. You also need to make sure that you clear the hopper every week to make sure the beans flow. So it’s moderately more convenient than a basic machine and I think the quality of the coffee is somewhat improved, but I won’t know until I get my regular stuff.

This is on the list of things Mrs. Phibes won't currently let me have. We were buying a microwave last week and she had to escort me away from one of these, quite forcibly. I honestly don't understand - we use a Nespresso machine and with the cost of pods this thing would pay for itself within about 2-3, maybe 5 years.

I use a single-cup Keurig machine. I'm the only one who drinks coffee in the house, and it's pure convenience. Add water, add pod, get coffee. I like breakfast blend (light/medium) for both taste and it has a bit more caffeine than dark roast I hear. The most important part is my use of K-Cups helps offset @Horace's attempts at preventing Global Warming.

For the record, I am very confident the quality of coffee could be much better if I put more thought/effort into it. But for me it's a pragmatic (fast + energy) play.

I'm quite happy with my french press coffee every morning.

Nespresso here. I’m of the snobby elitist idea the one can only drink real espresso in Italy and therefore any other option is inferior by definition

                      I like Keurig

                      I just need fast, easy

I don't care much about taste or temperature or any additives, the sense of taste is fading anyway

                      Just fast coffee is enough

They’ll end up, after a lot of drama, with the same formula they use every time they have a trifecta: take away health care and food assistance from low income families and use the money to fund tax cuts for their donors.
