@Horace I see your point, but I still fail to see the value Kim Kardashian brings to society. LOL

You just have to appreciate the free market, and the fact that, for whatever reason, she draws the attention of lots of people, of their own free will. You don't have to respect her or those people who find her fascinating, but you should respect a free market.

I understand that, and tried to say that in a one of my posts above. I also realize that it is the free market at work. Companies are willing to pay her USD$250K for a sponsored post on her social media, so they must think they are getting their monies worth. The many many millions of people who follow her get some sort of enjoyment by doing so. So, i guess it is a win-win for all involved. šŸ™‚

@Aqua-Letifer Maybe not noteworthy or surprising, but I think it is interesting. But, someone like Kim Kardashian is an "outlier" of sorts when it comes to this.

When other crazy shit happens in America or elsewhere, people say 'society is broken. People's values are all messed up'. I'd say Kim getting gazillions of dollars for doing whatever it is she does is more crazy shit.

Been two months without talking about this, so thought I would "stir the pot" a bit with a recent article. LOL

                      https://www.inc.com/bruce-crumley/surveys-tipping-culture-giving-way-to-tip-fatigue.html

...recent survey results that show a majority of U.S. consumers are fed up with the psychodrama over gratuities, with nearly 60 percent saying it's time for service industry business owners to increase worker pay so customers won't be expected to supplement it.

Fully 74 percent of respondents to a survey by personal finance company WalletHub reported feeling "tipping culture has gotten out of control," with 57 percent ascribing that to "businesses replacing employee salaries with tips."

Had a late dinner at Olive Garden the other day. They have these tablets that you use to place the order, then they bring you your food and drink, check in on a refill of your drink, then you pay via the tablet.

This was not my bill, but a picture from online…

                        alt text

                        Suggested tip is 20%.

                        1. I am still confused about when and why 20% became standard instead of 15%

                        2. Is standard tip appropriate to ask for when there was no assistance in ordering and no assistance with paying? Servers are normally tipped for service including taking the orders (and possibly advising), bringing the food and drinks and being attentive to the customer, and bringing my bill and processing the transaction. 2 of the 4 were removed, and frankly the whole being attentive part is diminished when they aren’t taking your order and they aren’t collecting your money. It was essentially busing the table. What’s the appropriate percentage.

                        3. You’ll notice in the picture that the tip was based on THE TOTAL, post tax! They even note it on the screen!

This is why tip fatigue is happening. I love to tip and tip well for good service. This is trying to trick me into tipping for poor service, and it’s removing that human contact we were talking about the other day.

                          Then work in restaurants.

The shift happened once card payments became the norm. Cash tips aren't taxed (notice I didn't say shouldn't be taxed, they should. I said aren't because they aren't just about everywhere), but card tips are. The 5% covers that so the card doesn't result in lost wages for the employee.

                          1. Is standard tip appropriate to ask for when there was no assistance in ordering and no assistance with paying?

It's complicated AF because of how these machines dole out the tips. For some places, those you talk to will never see a penny of that money.

Best thing to do is ask the person you'd rather have paid from your tip how the money works. I've never come across a situation in which they didn't tell me.

From there, make your best judgment. Although if I were Phibes or TG I'd strongly suggest never getting the soup as a return customer.

                          Please love yourself.

20% of the subtotal or the total including taxes?

The amount including tax. I didn't even know the other thing was an option.

If I'm honest, this is due more to laziness than generosity, as it's easy to calculate.

Anyway, tipping should be banned. In England they give you blowjobs at the table and drive you home afterwards if you tip more than 5%. And that's just the blokes. When you visit next year make sure you ask for a happy ending over dessert.

                                I was only joking

So both of us have been overly generous, despite Aqua's attempts to smear us as no-nothing foreigners who need to mind our own damn business.

As for soup, I never eat the filthy stuff. I've heard about what Americans do to it.
