Yes, it was. I'd have to say it's my favorite movie ever.

I loved that movie, too. The descent of Michael from this fresh-faced kid right out of the army into the monster he became was really well done.

      I was only joking

And Coppola hammers the point home twice.

        1. He tells Kay that she can ask him about his business - once. And then he lies to her about it.

        2. At the very end of the movie, when Michael is talking to the capos in his office, Kay is outside the door. The door is closed, and Kay realizes that he's become a monster AND that he lied to her.

I've watched that movie probably 50 times, but I only watched it for the first time in my mid 20s. That scene in the Italian restaurant blew me away. As riveted as I'll ever be watching a movie.

Pay attention to the detail that Coppola put into this scene.

The noise of the elevated train in the background. The view from over the top of the stall while Michael slicks down his hair and leaves the bathroom.

Somewhere, I read that Coppola hid the gun - it was in a different location from where it had been placed during rehearsals. That way, Pacino had to feel around to find it.

His hand glides right over the place he eventually pulls it from. Seems like there was never a gun there in one shot, then in the next shot it starts in his hand, and they add a sound effect where the gun detaches from the tank. But I wasn't the director of Godfather so you should take my opinion with a grain of salt. Bottom line, Coppola knows more than I do about the making of that movie, and I am humble enough to admit that.

There's another scene in which Sonny grabs a reporter's camera and smashes it. That wasn't in the script, and the actor's reaction was genuine. Go to 2:40 in the second video I linked.

I used to do stupid movie reviews all the time, and would maintain a Top 10 list. It used to be Back to the Future, but once I saw Godfather, that took the top spot.

Total side note, I re-watched Interstellar last night. That movie is so incredibly good, and hits differently now that I have a kid, which is central to the whole movie plot.

Randomly watched a bit of The Godfather again tonight. It finally occurred to me that the restaurant assassination scene makes no sense. Since the Corleones knew where the meeting would be, they could have just ambushed them there. No need for Michael to risk it alone. Sonny even suggests they shoot them in the car at the pickup spot until Hagen says the targets might not even be in the car. So an ambush is already on the table and considered reasonable. Why not do it at the restaurant?
