Hunt for the Red October

This movie was on TV the other day, I hadn't seen it in many years so I watched it again. Fun movie, the start (I think?) of Jack Ryan movies.

Anyway...gotta admit, I found the part where they had Jack Ryan, a CIA Analyst, steer the Red October submarine at the end during a torpedo attack, quite laughable. He was surrounded by lifelong submarine captains and experts, but they had Jack Ryan take over the controls. Cool.

I remember reading the book when it first came out. There's a lot more backstory on Ramius in the book which really explains his motives better. Jack Ryan is pretty geeky in the book, in fact in most of the books, he's not an "action hero." Tom Clancy got investigated by (?) FBI because there was a lot of information in the book that was supposedly classified. Apparently, his logic, which was finally accepted was "The 4 is classified. The number 1 and the number 3 are not classified. I put them together, and figured out 4."

Favorite moment is when they transition from speaking Russian to English to avoid the need for subtitles. Probably the best submarine movie ever, IMO.

Oh, and Sean Connery's toupee was about $20K.

Yeah that zoom in and out method was pretty cool.

In the book, did they ever explain Connery's Scottish accent? In the movie, I think they said he was Lithuanian and therefore did not have a pure allegiance to the USSR.

LOL, no. I loved the way Ramius Connery pronounced "хорошо." It came out sounding like "horrorshow."

Yes, and he was pissed at the USSR because they screwed up his wife's medical care, killing her. I believe he sent a letter to his father-in-law to that effect, explaining his defection.
