Where were you when.............?

I remember hearing about Michael Jackson. Was at a restaurant before a movie.
I remember being in NYC at a breakfast place when the news came in about sandyhook. Mind numbing numbers regarding elementary school kids killed.
9/11 is easy. Was in college and @Aqua-Letifer was in the dorm room next to mine. He woke me up to tell me his mom called about a plane hitting the towers. I went back to sleep but when he came back in to say the pentagon was just hit…it became very real. We watched with other dorm mates as the towers fell. I honestly remember thinking it was a remarkable sight and foolishly figured the buildings had been evacuated by then.
I think @Aqua-Letifer also told me about the Columbia shuttle disaster in a similar manner… maybe that was the event he heard from his mom and not 9/11.

Yeah, I woke your ass up for that. I knew because Dan woke me up and he was my roommate that year. Dan knew because he was in the lower bunk and he picked up the phone when my mom called. My mom knew because my grandmother was watching the news in the morning and saw everything on live TV.
With the exception of maybe Gabe, I don't think anyone else was awake at the time I told you.
My dad I think told me about Columbia, which, yeah, I told others after I heard.

I was barely in Australia for a week when the Christchurch earthquake hit. It was a big damn deal over there—I was standing in a McDonald's and just watched it over the news, as did everyone else inside. I have no idea if it got any air time over here.
When Bin Laden got his ass shot up, that also happened when I was in Australia. They were a lot more concerned about international law violations than basically everybody in America at the time.

Ah yes! Good details. Damn, totally forgot about Dan. Good dude. And yes about Gabe… but later watched the towers fall in Andy’s room.

I was going down an escalator in a department store when it was announced over the PA that Elvis Presley had not only left the building but left this world. You could hear a pin drop in the store and shopping mall for next five or so minutes.
Was watching the 11 pm TV news when the bulletin came across that John Lennon had been shot. Seems to me it was ten minutes later when they confirmed that he had died from his wounds.
As a teen with my parents in the living room we watched live TV of Bobby Kennedy making his final victory speech and leave the stage. What seemed like moments later, talking head reporters were announcing there had been a shooting in the kitchen and someone at the microphone was asking if there was a doctor in the house.
Other incidents I remember were MLK’s asassination in the middle of the Federal Liberal convention that brought Pierre Trudeau to the leadership of the Liberal Party.
JFK’s assassination - I was home from school with a bad cold or flu.
Cuban missile crisis - my parents were visibly worried.
John Glenn’s Mercury mission into orbital space.
Most important: the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. Watched the whole game on a 26 inch black and white TV at my friend’s house in the basement.

I remember precisely where I was when gulf war 1 and 2 started (sharper image in dadeland mall in Miami, my hotel in Shanghai)
-
The one I remember is the John Lennon killing - coming down to the kitchen for breakfast and being surprised how freaked out my mum was about it. Up until that point most kids my age pretty much ignored Lennon, he was from this old time generation as far as I was concerned, but the scenes from the local TV station based in Liverpool (it's only 35 miles from where I lived) were astonishing, and it made me realise what a big deal it was for people.

I was home sick for the JFK assassination. Third grade. Heard it on the parents’ radio in their bedroom.

I was home sick the day of the Challenger explosion. Turned on the TV and it happened to be on the live feee for the launch.
I don’t really recall where I was when Michael Jackson and such died.. Just not a big enough impact on my life.

As for 9/11, living and working 4-5 miles away from Dulles Airport? I remember that day exceedingly well.
Spent a good hour watching F15s flying in circles, some only several hundred feet in the air? That will make an impression.
-
I was in a shopping mall in Honolulu when I first saw the Thriller video.
Gulf War 1 - I was home watching Peter Jennings talk about the B52s dropping bombs. A friend was one of the B52 pilots.
9/11 I was at work in Reston, the lady who had the office next to mine was at a funeral in Arlington Cemetery. She called to say we were under attack because she saw the plane (she thought it was a missile) hit the Pentagon.
JFK, in school the nuns were going crazy crying.
When Apollo 10 got the 'Go for TLI' I was watching at home in Boston, same for Neil Armstrong's first step.

Yes, I went home to watch on TV and saw a F16 flying at treetop flying over Dulles Airport. The Dulles tower was at the end of my street. At that time, there was a mysterious unknown aircraft in the vicinity. It later turned out that the plane didn't exist.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard that Brutus murdered Julius Caesar on the Ides of March.

The area looks a bit different today.

Oh I bet. Before I moved to MN I lived near Bailey's Crossroads in a tall building. Let's just say I've mapped the flight path of the one that hit the Pentagon, and it would've been about 500 feet up and about a 1/2 mile from my balcony that day. Would've been very weird to hear it, see it, and then feel it since it's within "shaking" distance of the Pentagon impact. But... I was at college.

I remember the mysterious plane… I also remember “attacks” at Press buildings in DC, “Gunfire” ay the Washington Monument, and warnings about poisoned water supplies. Something that gets lost in the horror and tragedy of that day was how badly our media failed on that day.

Also, the Bowling Green massacre. How soon we forget. Each one of these little wooden balls represents a little wooden ball.
