Smart marketing. Just had a construction firm out for an estimate. The pen they left has not only their name, but a level and rulers in inches and centimeters.

Smart indeed.
You don't want flashy swag, expensive swag, or even swag that leaves an impression.
You want useful swag they're going to keep on their desk, every day, for months if not years.
