The Homeschool Band…
-
One of the concerns we had with home schooling was the extracurricular activities, including band and such. On one of Karla’s homeschool groups, she saw an announcement about a Homeschool Middle School Age Concert Band. She went into the mailing list and was contacted by the director who turned out to be Lucas’ Middle School Band Director! It turns out that when her littles got old enough to go to school, she realized she didn’t want them in that system, so she runs a local homeschool band system.. Pay is about what she was making in the district without a lot of the other responsibilities. She has 4 different bands going at the MS level. The number of students in each matches a MS band, and she’s commented that the playing level is significantly higher…
I find that very interesting…

I find that interesting as well but not at all surprising.

It's great that he has the option to play with the band.
It's too bad that so many feel like they don't want their children in public schools.

There is a very robust home school association here being run out of a local church. Extracurricular activities include choir, instrument ensembles, soccer (boys & girls), basketball (boys&girls) and volleyball (girls). Since Louisiana allows homeschoolers to play sports at public high schools, the homeschool sports programs focus on grades 4-8, dividing those into 4-6 grade and 7-8 grade sectors.
The homeschool association is non-denominational and leases their space from the church (it's a super low lease, mainly covering just the cost of utilities and cleanup), which is mostly just the gym and a couple of practice/meeting rooms.

On another note, there is a waiting list for parochial schools down her, particularly pre-K through sixth grade schools. Cost runs about $600/month. If you are a member of the local diocese, I think they give a $50/month cut. There is also a small discount for multiple children.

I think that the % of parents are more involved with their kids if they are homeschooled vs, a public school is higher. Parent involvement is key to having kids do well in school.
