In winter I like to celebrate medieval history by reading two or more monographs on the subject. Just finished a good one entitled The Brothers York by Thomas Penn. Details the lives of Edward IV and his brothers Clarence and Richard who we know as Richard III. One if the better books I have read on the turbulent history of the House of York. Highly recommended.
But no, I don’t indulge in pop culture ethnic history celebrations. I find it all quite an annoying distraction.

Yorkshire History Month would be a great idea. An annual reminder for them them of the drubbing they received at the hands of the Lancastrians. We could also discuss cricket and the Roses Match, although there the results have been more mixed in favour of the cheating tykes.

Wow, it’s like a Vulcan mind meld… The Nigeria slave trade was exactly what I was thinking about.
The unsaid horrible little secret… If many of the current African American ancestors weren’t brought over to the Americas, they either wouldn’t have been born, or would still be slaves in Africa. Or their ancestors would have been sold to the ottomans, and from what I have read? That would have been far, far worse.

Truth be known both were usurping dynasties of the same bloody family starting with Henry IV. In the end neither side really won. All British monarchs through to the present can trace lineage back to Cecily Neville wife of Richard of York and mother to Edward IV and Richard III through Henry Tudor’s wife, Elizabeth of York who was the daughter of Edward IV.
In any event it came as something of a let down for me to discover our family were most likely Lancastrians owing to whose land we domiciled in the 15th Century. You can take the test here:

I seem to remember reading that there were actually very few Yorkists in York. They were actually based in Southern England and Wales, so in the parlance of the north, they were a bunch of toffee-nosed bastards and sheep-shaggers.
Incidentally, finding out you're Lancastrian isn't nearly as disappointing as finding out that you're French, which is what happened to me fairly recently.

Both Lancastrians and Yorkists were quite French.
Anyhow my maternal grandfather was for all intents and purposes French. A Savoyard, he was born there (in Chambery) and went to school there and considered himself French despite having an Italian family name.

My dad was from Twickenham, my mother was from what is now Greater Manchester, so I'm half and half. The London side of the family originally came from Lancashire and Ireland and some of the Altrincham side came from France, via Brighton.
I'm a mutt, IOW. And proud of it.
At least I'm not Welsh. My wife has Welsh ancestry mixed with Austro-Hungarian. Her great grandfather was an Austrian/Hungarian concert violinist FFS.

Don't want white history month. Or American Indian History Month. Or Japanese History Month.

The strength of America is the defactionalization of the Melting Pot.
We've got some great all-inclusive national holidays...Fourth of July, President's Day, Veteran's Day...Celebrate them as Americans, no matter race, creed or color.
Agreed. Would be nice to focus on and celebrate our collective identity as Americans. It would help the nation heal from past injustices more than one might think.
A melting pot we are, but we need to melt. Otherwise we’re more of a salad that is mixed together but not transformed.
It’s not perfect but I have enjoyed the cultural change going from Northern Virginia to Minnesota. There is a more cohesive feel here whereas in Northern Virginia it was highly fragmented. Pockets of cultures (ethnicity, language, etc) that never mix. No central identity. Somewhat because it’s a transient area where people come for jobs but later leave. In Minnesota, it’s all hot dishes, Scandinavian flags, and passive aggressive niceness.
