Senator Tom Cotton of the US, questioning Chew Shou Zi a native born Singaporean CEO of Tok Tok.

The senators also questioned Mr Chew’s citizenship, asking if he was a citizen of any other country besides Singapore. When he denied that was the case, Mr Cotton asked if he had ever applied for Chinese citizenship, noting that he had lived in Beijing.

“Senator, I served my nation in Singapore,” Mr Chew replied, adding that he had not sought Chinese citizenship.

Mr Cotton then asked if he had other passports apart from Singapore’s. When Mr Chew replied that he did not have any, the senator noted that his wife and children were American citizens.

He went on to question if Mr Chew has ever been a member of, associated or affiliated with the Communist Party of China (CPC).

“Senator, I’m Singaporean! No,” replied Mr Chew, stressing that he has no links with the Chinese party.

Now, I am not a fan of Tik Tok (in fact I would have no problem in it being banned) but this was kind of racist questioning.

Cotton should know better than to ask a question when he doesn’t already know the answer

Yes. But. he's a good enough lawyer to explore Chew's background. I wonder how much time he had in his questioning before he could get to the meat of where he was supposedly headed. What are Chew's allegiances? The fact that he's not a Chinese citizen and served in army of Singapore do not preclude him from working for the Chinese.

Wait, he's the CEO of TIkTok. He does work for the Chinese. His citizenship, past military history, and nation of birth are irrelevant.

I agree, but he were Indian or Malay or Caucasian (which are all pretty big populations in Singapore), would he have asked that questions? I doubt it.

Probably. That or, a least a variation of it, has been a standard question at Senate inquiries since the late 1940s.

Yeah the question about whether he's ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party is like if someone asked a white-looking person from Brazil (and never been a citizen of the US), "Have you ever been a member of the US Congress?"

                Correct.

No, that's like asking the CEO of Microsoft if he's ever been a US Citizen.

                              Cotton's questions:

"Is TikTok under the influence of the Chinese Communist Party?"

Cotton goes on and on connecting Chew to the CCP.

And then, about halfway through, he gets into the citizenship comments. After that, he starts, for some unknown reason, asking about Tiannamin (sp?) Square and Chinese genocide.
