...but this is a tribute to the pubs of my home town, many sadly gone.
I knew a lot of these places - my girlfriend worked behind the bar of one of the first ones they talk about, the Sumners. He doesn't mention that the beer was absolutely bloody awful.

In Chicago, that would be a long, long time.
I went around Preston on a pub crawl with my brother in 2020, just before Covid closed everything down, and there were a number of pubs that had been there for well over a hundred years, all dark brown wood, but it was really quiet, almost dead. I'll probably never visit the town again. We ended up in a student place where there was actually some life, but very little character.
Where he lives now in Chorlton, near Manchester, is very different. Extremely lively and also plenty of character.
