I love hot food, but there's definitely a lot of stupidity associated with it. In the UK it's a badge of honour to eat a curry that is so hot it's essentially inedible.
The Phall, which is supposed to be the hottest curry, originated in Birmingham rather than India or Pakistan. Somebody I know once bought one for this customer from Texas who'd been boasting about how spicy their food was. He didn't finish it.

Speaking of curry, if you ever want to piss off an Indian,
remindeducate them that chilis came from South America and are a relatively recent import into Indian culture. I have had several experiences where they get angry at the suggestion, until they google a bit. -
