Amazon does track returns, and abusers of the system have their privileges revoked.

Yeah - the most aggravating example for me is that they don't price match at all. So if you buy something and it goes on sale - you're allowed to return it and re-buy, but you won't get a price adjustment.

Interesting. How would they know? If you request refund and return. Then but again at new lower price…?

Oh you're completely free to return and rebuy if the price of something goes down. Amazon won't price adjust if you ask though. You have to ship it back with the return, and get it shipped again with a new product.

Mik's probably right that managing simple rules is easier with suppliers than having a bunch of exception processes.

I keep hearing that free returns at Amazon may be getting cut ...

Last year the Amazon delivery guy got addresses confused.

Over a few months I received more than 30 packages intended for a similar address about 1/4 mile away.

I called Amazon each time. They told me I could keep the package. I told them no, I will deliver it. After several packages the recipients started giving me cookies, so it was a good deal.

If I kept them all I expect Amazon might have come knocking.

There's a whole world of people scamming Amazon..

Buy two items - one cheap, one expensive.

Ask for return for expensive item, return cheap item (no questions asked at point of return).

Sell expensive item on eBay or elsewhere.

Can you elaborate? The two items look alike or what? Or can you just return a pencil when you received an iphone?

                Exactly.

When you return, the point of return simply scans the QR code and places the item into a bin/bag for shipping. I don't think the QR code tells the agent what, exactly, is being returned - they just accept it. Many Amazon returns say "No bag or packaging required," so there may be a mechanism for the agent to check what you're turning.

But, if you put your returned item in a bag, or switch the packaging, it's easy enough to cheat.

That said, there are cases of people getting caught for hundreds of thousands of dollars of fraudulent returns - jail time.

Yeah that makes sense. Would be somewhat easy. Sad, but fraud always finds a way like water through a rock.

Every time I request a return from Amazon, I'm amazed at how it's a "No questions asked" thing.

They just accept it, and refund your purchase. A smaller place would probably lose $$ on this, but, for Amazon, it's probably a rounding error.

I bet Amazon passes the full price of the return back to the vendor. Amazon does some interesting stuff - that is why they are being sued. For example, even though Amazon will take up to 50% of the price as a commission for selling on their site, a vendor is not allowed to sell the same product for a cheaper amount anywhere.
