A cable car carrying six children and two adults dangled hundreds of metres above the ground in a remote part of Pakistan after it broke on Tuesday, trapping the occupants for hours before rescuers arrived in helicopters to try to free them.

Army commandos could be seen on local TV trying to lower themselves on ropes from the choppers toward the cable car. An expert warned the rescue was incredibly delicate, because the wind created by the helicopter blades could further weaken cables holding the car aloft.

Somewhat related, I watched a documentary once called "On The Way to School" which looked at 4 children from different parts of the world and the tough journeys they had to do just to get to school. This group of kids using a cable car would have been a good part of the story. Great documentary by the way

Cable cars are apparently a common method of travel in rural areas of Pakistan. They got a few out by helicopter, the rest by a rigged up harness system.

When I saw the car itself, it certainly would have been scary. Just a flimsy open metal cage.
