Can you join threads without joining instagram? I have no interest in the latter
Yes, you can. You can either import your IG stuff or start fresh, doesn't matter.
Apparently not.
I literally did the very thing you're asking about. You have the option to import your IG contacts or not. I mean maybe you still need an IG account to start but that takes like 30 seconds.

I created an IG account, then went to threads to create a login.
I swear, when I hit “submit” it took me directly to a screen telling me my account was suspended for violating rules and I have 180 days to “disagree” else the account will be permanently banned.
I hit “disagree”, it sends me an email code. I type in the code, but the submit button is greyed out, as if I haven’t typed anything yet.
So I guess I’m done.

Twitter sends Meta cease-and-desist letter over new Threads app.
Apparently, Truth Social also sent a cease-and-desist letter. It was hand delivered by Giuliani to Threads Fashion Boutique, a women's clothing store in Cincinnati.
Fixed.

Sorry, my bad. There's no freaking way Trump would use the Failing USPS.

I have no interest in Threads. Same has been the case with Twitter. I don't mean to say that arrogantly, I just try to cut down on noise. For example, on my phone I have most notifications turned off, and don't even have my company email logged in, so that I only can see email when I'm sitting at my work desk during.....work. I also very quickly unsubscribe from companies that email me.
Anyway, I do have Facebook but only check it from my desktop every couple of days to see what our neighborhood page has posted. My main social media app is Instagram, as I prefer to see photo updates from friends and that's about it.
My kids are noisy enough these days.

I dealt with the same bullshit with IG a few years ago.

A privacy nightmare.
https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/05/threads-no-eu-launch/?guccounter=1
Information provided about the app’s privacy via mandatory disclosures required on iOS shows the app may collect highly sensitive information about users in order to profile their digital activity — including health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, search history and other sensitive information.
Given that Meta, the developer behind the app, the company formerly known as Facebook, makes its money from tracking and profiling web users to sell their attention via its behavioral advertising microtargeting tools this is hardly surprising. But it does raise questions over whether Threads will be able to launch in the European Union where the legal basis Meta had claimed for processing Facebook users’ personal data (performance of a contract) was found unlawful at the start of this year.
Meta has since switched to a claim of legitimate interest for this data-for-ads processing. But, earlier this week, the bloc’s top court piled more regional woe on Meta via a judgement on a German case referral where the Court said this legal basis is not appropriate for running Meta’s behavioral ads either and consent needs to be sought. Under current EU law, sensitive information such as health data also requires an even higher standard of explicit consent to be legally processed in order to be compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation. So Meta would need to ask and obtain specific permission for processing sensitive data like health into.

Seen on the webz. Not that there's any real new info that hasn't been posted before, but I found the last sentence interesting and probably accurate.
Here's some of what the Threads app on iOS hands over to Meta when you click that Yeah, whatever button:
- Purchases (Purchase History)
- Financial Info (Other Financial Info)
- Location (Precise Location, Coarse Location)
- Contact Info (Physical Address, Email Address, Name,
- Phone Number, Other User Contact Info)
- User Content (Emails or Text Messages, Photos or Videos
- Audio Data, Gameplay Content, Customer Support, Other User Content)
- Search History
- Browsing History
- Health & Fitness (Health, Fitness)
Uh, no. No, I will not be creating a Threads account.
The Twitter app on iOS is better, but still terrible. Don't use official apps if you can possibly avoid it. There is a reason companies push you to use the official app, and it is not because it's better for you.

So? One's a fucking cesspool.

My issue with Threads is that it’s completely app based, and the number of permissions that it wants. I’m tempted to get another device for a work account that will be strictly used just for work based social media.

A good idea, actually.

Meta Blocks Access to its Threads App to EU Users with VPNs
Threads, Meta’s Twitter clone launched to great fanfare last week, crossing 100 million users in just five days. And this happened without Threads officially launching in the EU due to privacy concerns.
Until now, EU users have been able to various use workarounds to get the Threads app on iOS and Android and sign up. For Android users, the APK file to install the Threads app is quite easy to find, while iOS users can create a US-based App Store account to download the app.
Something happened earlier today, though. Threads users in the EU started to notice that the app was no longer working as usual, even when using a VPN. And Meta has now confirmed to TechCrunch that it has taken new measures to block Threads in the EU.
“Threads is not currently available in most countries in Europe and we’ve taken additional steps to prevent people based there from accessing it at this time. Europe continues to be an incredibly important market for Meta and we hope to make Threads available here in the future,” Meta said in a statement.
As of this writing, it appears that EU users can still access their Threads newsfeed. However, users are seeing a “post failed to upload” message when they try to create a new thread. Moreover, checking messages on any profile displays a “content not available message.”
Despite some genuine enthusiasm during its launch week, it appears that Threads is already losing some steam in its second week. According to data from Sensor Tower (via CNBC), Threads saw its number of daily users go down 20% since Saturday, and user time spent on the platform is also down 50%.

Old news. Either they fixed this or workarounds are easy.

100 million in less than a week.
This is exactly like the Snowden bullshit. Everyone's so busy condemning the thing they don't like, they don't even know what the thing they don't like actually implies.
