One day at Disney

In Orlando you can’t directly buy speed pass for the whole day.
You have to get a VIP tour guide, which costs between $450 and $900 per hour and you have to buy a minimum of 7 hours. That’s for up to 10 people and does give you front of line access to all rides all day.

It's no bloody wonder people are buying food on Buy Now, Pay Later.
The funny thing is, most of the people there didn't look particularly well off, including us.

She spent $800 on lightsabers. So yes I'd imagine it's pricey but you can determine HOW pricey it is.
We plan to go eventually. I've never been, and my kids would like it. Since I hate crowds in general, my idea is to go in early February or one of the "less crowded" times of the year, and also to avoid the summer heat... the one thing I hate even more than crowds. Whenever we do go, I will forget the concept of a budget since I doubt I'll be thinking about how much it cost when I'm old and my kids are turning 30.

That lady had a high budget, but not totally out of the question. And it looks like she had 3 children with her, I assume 5 people total.
I have had about a dozen family vacations at Disney, one was California.
Back in the early-mid 90s, I used to figure about $1,000 per day for 3 of us. So a 4 or 5 day trip would cost $4K or $5K.
Now I would guess 2-3 times that.
I'll be in Orlando for a few days next week and I'll probably go the Disney Springs for some shopping or meals. This trip it is just me and the wife so we won't bother with the parks It isn't worth the few hundred we would drop to go there.
The publicity they have had lately is that not only have the prices gone up, but the product they offer has gone down. It seems to have become an old tired assembly line.

I've been...lemme see... to Disneyland once, in 1968, and to Disney World three times, in 1975, 1996 and the mid-2000's sometime.
You couldn't get me back there now. My SIL and her family used to go several times a year. The staff knew them. They just went after the first of the year and said they won't go back. The crowds and costs were just ridiculous.

So it's going to cost at least $3150 to not stand in line - per day.
Am I reading that right?

Yes.

Crowds disgust me, so probably not. I have no positive memories of crowd parks. Only negative. Never been to any Disney property, as far as I can recall. I got bad sunburn by going to a water park in my teens, with my friends. Probably not a great thing to get that sort of sunburn.

We could never afford it when my kids were small, and they always went to England in the summer to spend time with their grandparents. Now, we finally can, but they're too old (the kids, not the grandparents)

How long did you live in the DC area again, LOL?

Snarky: 40 years but eventually I made it to a less crowded, less humid area!
Not snarky: I've always said if you are visiting DC, to get up at 6am and walk the National Mall. You can have an entire place to yourself...the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, heck you could have the entire East side of the Capitol to yourself. It's really beautiful, nearly empty, and you avoid the afternoon heat/crowds.

My earlier draft disappeared. Too bad, because it was brilliant!
The long and short of it? It is expensive as hell, but they also made REALLY bad decisions. The restaurants they ate at were the most expensive in the park and it looks like they splurged (without tipping, according to the receipts). They also would have had to stay at the most expensive resort and upgraded the room. The lightsabers are $200 each, so they either bought accessories or were wrong.
The other thing is that these parks aren’t designed and priced for one day trips. They price them to encourage you to stay longer.
Last year I got a quote for a 4-night/5-day trip to Universal at a moderate resort. The total cost with express passes was $4050. Add on $400 per day for food and souvenir (You can easily spend $35 per adult per meal and $30 per person snacks) and you are at $6K.
Instead, I bought annual passes, used the annual passes to get 30% off the premium resorts (which includes the Express Passes at no charge), and booked a 6-night/7-day stay for a total of $4200. The passes also give restaurant and merchandise discounts between 10%-20%. I charged everything back to the room. When I checked out, we had spent $2200 on food, drink, merchandise, and tips and we didn’t count pennies at the restaurants. We ate what we wanted where we wanted.
On one hand you have $1200 per day at the moderate resort and medium restaurants, on the other you have $900 per day at the top tier resort level and restaurants. And on top of that, we are going back this Thursday through Wednesday and getting a suite this time. $3200 and our tickets are already paid for… Assuming we spend the same on food, that will be $771 per day. It would have been $571 for a regular room…
