As @jon-nyc said in another thread, this year people learned the "social distancing" term, next year, they'll learn the "ferguson effect" term. Obviously more variables than just that effect at play, but it certainly isn't helping things.

To the extent the left allows the Ferguson effect into conversation, they dismiss it as myth. That’s another in a large collection of beliefs of the left that is non disprovable by any imaginable statistic. Like everything else having to do with race charged issues.
