Reading this reminds me that I should be grateful for the HOA of our condo.
22 units, mostly
geezersolder people. No one seems to have an agenda, and no one is a "condo commando." Everyone just wants to get along and make life simple and good. In my 14 years (!) here, I don't think we've ever had a disagreement among the owners. -
Good to hear George, I was beginning to envision those subduvisions as populated and policed by resident Gladys Kravitz types.
@Renauda I can't comment on subdivisions, but our building has four stories (1st level is retail) and 3 levels of residences.
OTOH, our town is a "National Historical District" and there is a very active and vocal historical society that has a hissy fit when there are any requests for going outside the codified zoning regulations.
Fortunately, our village government has always abided by the actual law rather than by what a collection of self-identified preservationists want.
"If you don't like the law - change it."
There was a yuge kerfuffle about 20 years ago over the choice of plantings in the business district. The aforementioned society claimed that the plantings were not "historically accurate." The government said, "STFU."

HOA's really are an opportunity for a certain kind of person to get in touch with their inner Gauleiter.

I effin hate HOA’s. I still can’t believe that I had to join one. I like the community but the steps they try to take?
My grass is cut, my property looks fine. On 3 occasions they have tried to push me on an issue. My response each time has been “Are you sure that you want to go to war over that point?” and each time they’ve backed down.
I did rush the paver patio finale just because I didn’t want to deal with them. They ran the inspection, saw the obvious work that had been done, and said nothing.

We had a condo HOA where we lived in Virginia, and now have one for our neighborhood. I don’t mind them at all…they manage the common area landscaping, pools, and in general make sure the houses don’t go to crap.

Toddler pool in the front yard.

When our tree started coming down, I had to move some of the larger branches to common area out of the way from walkways until the tree removal company could arrive, which took 2 days.

We currently have a big pile of crappy old lumber on our front lawn that was left behind by the guy who replaced the awful wooden support for the flower bed with a nice stone wall. I see this guy walk past every day, looking at it and wishing there was an HOA.
At some point we'll hire a skip.

I accept it - in the sense that I find the memes funny - but frankly I don’t like the idea that the culture decided we can have a running joke about people of a certain phenotype just because those phenotypes (white females of a certain age) are disfavored in the intersectional hierarchy.
Imagine an analogous memetic complex concerning “Laqishas” and whether or not it would get the same play.
