As I have asked before, what do you people use to measure the US economy?
If it is layoffs at Dell, maybe it is not doing so well.
If it is unemployment rate, maybe it is doing well.I am sure if President Trump were in office, the comment about "the economy doing fine. Donald will tell us that in the SOTU address" would have come from @Axtremus and @Jolly would have responded with the January jobs report. 555

I'll be absolutely fucking amazed if we don't have sustained double-digit employment shrinkage in the next 5 years. I'm not an economist and I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I don't see how we're going to avoid it. I'd love to be wrong, though.

WASHINGTON, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) outsold General Motors Co (GM.N) in the United States in 2021, marking the first time the Detroit automaker has not led U.S. auto sales since 1931.
Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States in 2021, compared to 2.218 million for General Motors, the automakers said Tuesday.
When I worked at GM we were on the Fortune 1 list.
Since I left, things have changed.

I wonder if they’re trying to get ahead of AI layoffs. The more they lay off now, the fewer they need to lay off later.

I would doubt it. These things take a lot of time for large companies to figure out and sign off on. Total speculation, but I think we'll officially be in the shit due to AI by the end of this year.
I'm so glad our government is working hard on a solution to this.

...You see high profile layoffs in headlines, yet the unemployment rate stays historically low. Try not to confuse anecdotes with statistics.
If you really like anecdotes, try checking with your local hospitals, restaurants, schools, or just local employers in general to see if they are still facing labor shortage and/or increasing wage pressures, then compare that with the high profile layoff headlines you read in the news.
