      Personally? I plan on buying a 6 bedroom place in Durham. Free room and board for nursing students…

        I bet that's tough on your wife, nursing that many students...

          When we were looking at homes 25 years ago, my one criteria was that it had to have a bedroom and bath on the main floor.

          We ended up in this little ranch, which is perfect for growing old in. The front porch is large with one step. The library is a step down, but everything else is level. We're in the process of remodeling our master suite and it's designed to accommodate a wheelchair if we ever get to that point.

          For years my neighbor has asked if I wanted to switch houses. He and his wife are getting on, and they don't have a bedroom and bath on the main floor.

            Single floor here. I had no interest in a second floor I’d never visit. All the homes we looked at had the master suite on the first floor. I guess it’s how they build around here.

              The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

                The master of that suite happens to be a female of color.

                  Before we purchased our house 25 years ago, the previous owner applied to the city to convert it into an assisted living center. It has 4 bathrooms on the first floor. Each bedroom has its own bathroom.

                  If we stay here, it will be a prefect place.

                    If you could stand the renters, it would pay for itself.

                      @Jolly Don't think I haven't thought about that.

                      The upstairs is basically a 3 room apartment. Live in nursing? Would need to put some kitchen stuff up there but, there is an exhaust fan that looks like it was meant for a stove to sit underneath.

                        About assisted living...I have some friends (husband and wife) that started one. Since both are nurses, but the husband was an old rockhound, they not only oversaw and did some of the construction, but they cobbled up generic care plans, dietary, etc., before they even opened.

                        The original building was like a one-level, bunch of one-bedroom efficiency apartments...sitting area with kitchenette (no stoves), bedroom with connecting bathroom.

                        They did so well, they built some more, but in a different style. They built a series of individual cabins, all around a small courtyard. All cabins on slab, with like a little covered patio in front of each.

                        The cabins have been a huge hit. Residents are allowed to bring their own furniture and they are a bit larger than the original apartments.

                        All the residents have access to regularly scheduled fun things...bingo, game night, music night, church services, with a shopping trip or two during the week. Once a quarter they can go on a lengthier, long-weekend trip (health permitting)...Florida Panhandle, Houston, Ozarks, etc.
