@Jolly said in Aging population wants to live at home:
3-BR ranch.
Widen a few doorways and put a walk-in tub. No problem.
Jolly, you're in good shape. As a youngster, I always loved multistory homes. My parents loved the idea of a ranch house. My parents lusted after a neighbor's ranch house that had a huge living room - perhaps 32x24 along with a nice sized kitchen.
It will be interesting how the next few (hopefully) chapters play out. It's still hard to imagine that my next milestone birthday is 70. There's a significant part of me that never made it out of my mid-teens, and I often think of myself as just being 40ish for the last 30 years. Of course, when viewing people in their 40s, I wonder what year of school they're in.

My living room is 20x24. My kitchen has 26 cabinets. bedrooms are small enough to cuss a cat in. I had the concrete on my carport sloped up with a little swell to the back door, so you can roll whatever right on in.
I agree about the beauty of a two-story home. My niece and her husband just finished an 1890 farmhouse in Florida. Took them four years, but it turned out well. I'm envious, until I look at those front porch steps and the stairway to the second floor.

+1 in so many ways!

Get out before you have to get out.
Get out while you are capable enough to choose your fate.
My in-laws were great at managing this. They went from a large single family detached house to a small detached house to a 2-bedroom condo to active adult 1-bedroom to assisted living.
The good thing was they were more than capable of managing each move.
I know too many elderly couples who just get to the point where they can't cope.

Personally? I plan on buying a 6 bedroom place in Durham. Free room and board for nursing students…

When we were looking at homes 25 years ago, my one criteria was that it had to have a bedroom and bath on the main floor.
We ended up in this little ranch, which is perfect for growing old in. The front porch is large with one step. The library is a step down, but everything else is level. We're in the process of remodeling our master suite and it's designed to accommodate a wheelchair if we ever get to that point.
For years my neighbor has asked if I wanted to switch houses. He and his wife are getting on, and they don't have a bedroom and bath on the main floor.

Single floor here. I had no interest in a second floor I’d never visit. All the homes we looked at had the master suite on the first floor. I guess it’s how they build around here.

The master of that suite happens to be a female of color.

Before we purchased our house 25 years ago, the previous owner applied to the city to convert it into an assisted living center. It has 4 bathrooms on the first floor. Each bedroom has its own bathroom.
If we stay here, it will be a prefect place.

If you could stand the renters, it would pay for itself.

About assisted living...I have some friends (husband and wife) that started one. Since both are nurses, but the husband was an old rockhound, they not only oversaw and did some of the construction, but they cobbled up generic care plans, dietary, etc., before they even opened.
The original building was like a one-level, bunch of one-bedroom efficiency apartments...sitting area with kitchenette (no stoves), bedroom with connecting bathroom.
They did so well, they built some more, but in a different style. They built a series of individual cabins, all around a small courtyard. All cabins on slab, with like a little covered patio in front of each.
The cabins have been a huge hit. Residents are allowed to bring their own furniture and they are a bit larger than the original apartments.
All the residents have access to regularly scheduled fun things...bingo, game night, music night, church services, with a shopping trip or two during the week. Once a quarter they can go on a lengthier, long-weekend trip (health permitting)...Florida Panhandle, Houston, Ozarks, etc.
