Furthermore, ‘Under the FBI’s definition, a crime is deemed “cleared” if a suspect is arrested, charged and handed over to prosecutors. A case also is deemed cleared under other extraordinary circumstances, such as when the suspect dies prior to arrest or leaves the jurisdiction, or when a victim refuses to cooperate with prosecutors.’

It's basic math. The number of crimes vs the capacity of the police (hours, personnel, resources) to solve each. Imagine how the percentages will change as the police are demonized and defunded.
Do you think the huffpost would care to look at the statistics surrounding police "racism" (or lack thereof?). You know, of the 10 million arrests each year, only 0.01% result in a death (and of that tiny 0.01%, or approximately 1,000 deaths, whites are 25% more likely to be killed than blacks, in proportion to their respective contributions to crime). Oh and of the 1,000 deaths, only 50 were in a scenario where the offender didn't have a weapon.

@89th , ignore HuffPo’s editorial, I merely thought the statistics are interesting.
Years ago I have read that Tokyo Police claims >90% crime solving rates year after year but nobody believes them (they think Tokyo Police just sweeps most unsolved crimes under the rug or pin unsolved crimes on innocent hapless chaps to keep their publicized crime solving rates high). So it’s interesting for me to see the US’ more realistic crime solving rates.
There is something I believe the mere publicized existence of the police is accomplishing that is hard to quantify: the prevention of crime. I haven’t find any good statistical estimates for how much crime is prevented just because the police exists. Probably no one thought the police might disappear, so no one bothered to do such a study, yet.

The answer is pretty simple. Reduce the traffic cop responsibilities. Rather than having them sitting in a suburban neighborhood hoping to catch somebody pulling a rolling stop at the empty intersection, put a camera up and get the police into a position where they can actually protect and serve.
Would solve other issues as well. How many traffic stops go bad? I’ve read that a traffic stop is the most dangerous part of a police officer’s job. So remove it. Unless there is reasonable cause to pull a car over (possible driving under the influence, stolen car, etc...) then let it go. Expired tags? Mail a ticket.

@Jolly Most speeding tickets aren’t for someone driving 90 in a 55, it’s somebody doing 41 in a 35. And if somebody is driving 90, well that would be reasonable cause.

I used to consider 90 right lane stuff. I only have one speeding ticket on my record, a 78 in a 60mph zone. I was doing about 115 when I saw the cop.
