Thursday night I will be one of the judges at the annual gingerbread house contest and dinner at my daughter's place.

This has been going on for several years. With 2 people on each team there are usually 5 or 6 houses.

The builders like it. I mostly just watch, but I'll eat a few pieces of candy.

    The point? I don't know.

Fun and tradition. Good enough for anyone. We really don’t want to look too deeply at the utility of our little pleasures.

Funny timing. We did ours yesterday. We use the Costco pre-built house that comes with a tube of icing and we bring the candy.

I say funny timing because I had some friends on facebook really getting annoyed that their kids weren't focusing, were eating too much candy, etc...

I approach it, a bit as @Mik implied, with the overall fun and experience of it. Sure the house has a whole side without anything, and it's an unorganized mess, but I put the icing on and the kids did their best to place candies on. My 2 year old discovered his love for mini M&Ms and marshmallows in the process.

Analysis is the murderer of fun. The crazy mess is most of the point.

We did ours from scratch. Which isn't a brag, the point is not to be able to say that because it still looks like total ass. Point was it was fun.

          Please love yourself.

I’m firmly with you @LuFins-Dad . Gingerbread houses are a stupid waste of time & ingredients. Not fun. An incredible mess. Edible gingerbread men yes; houses nope 👎

This… And I enjoy decorating the Gingerbread Men, too. Luke and I are working on our own little scene. It’s really hard to sharpen candy canes into spear points, though.

@Mik That's brilliant and should be very edible if kept chilled. Great for a party. Have wine ready.

I love gingerbread houses. Family tradition since my kids were little. Messy, yes, and very time consuming for me (because I bake them from scratch, using a homemade pattern) but the kids loved it, we always invited their friends, even when they got older. The gingerbread is good, the candy was good, and the results were quite edible.
