Not sure. Would guess a french colony somewhere near Indonesia. At first I thought UK and Hong Kong in like 2000, but not really a colony.

Renauda got it - Macau was handed over from Portugal to China in 1999. IIRC, it was December 31st symbolically, ending 500 years of European colonization of Asia.

I was there maybe 7 years later and found no one spoke any Portuguese. It’s a huge gambling Mecca and has a separate visa regime than China because of it.

The whole reason we call them illegal aliens is because they’re subject to our laws.

My real estate selling agent was born there. First time I ever met someone from there. My wife has visited several times.

                    Education is extremely important.

Macau was an occasional (but long) night out when I would be in Hong Kong. Untold debauchery often ensued.

It was pretty "seedy" when under Portugal. I think it really took off when China took over, which is kind of surprising.

(I once had a taxi drive me around the course that the Formual 1 (or maybe Formula 3) raced. Do they still have that race?

It's F3 - and they still run it, although it's been cancelled of late due to Covid. Both Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher won the race before becoming big stars in F1.
