"In 1937, an underground explosion blew a 150-pound manhole cover five stories into the air. It came crashing through a skylight and plummeted down an elevator shaft in the adjacent Hollander Storage Warehouse just north of Fullerton on Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square.
The elevator was on the first floor when the manhole cover crashed through it, killing the operator, A.C. Day. Two others in the elevator escaped unharmed. The explosion was so big it blew off 17 manhole covers along Milwaukee Avenue between Kedzie and Western. Debris from the blasts also injured two women in their apartments and narrowly missed a streetcar.
Always wear a hard hat, this happens more often than you think. In New York City, they had 32 covers blow in 2014."

Great graphic for its day though.

They had some fun with it with the three whirls near the top.

Haha my thought too. Too bad they didn't add "Weeee!" somewhere along the dashed line

The manhole that killed A.C. Day was one of 17 manholes tossed in the air along Milwaukee Avenue between Kedzie and Western in the massive explosion.

Authorities at the time believed nearby business owners who illegally dumped cleaning solutions into the sewers were to blame for the explosion, according to WTTW. They said the cleaning solutions turned into gas that ignited.

            17!

"business owners", sure, I think we all know they were Trump supporters

Nah, it was 1937. They were probably Nazis.

The average manhole cover weighs around 250 lbs.
I feel sorry for the elevator operator.
                    He probably heard it coming.
Certainly would have left a mark on his forehead.

Here is another one where someone was hit with a piece of equipment from 300 yards away and killed. Standing in a restaurant parking lot. The reason I know this instance is that it happened at a tollway Oasis that I have been to before.

In northwest Belvidere IL. I am thinking that maybe @George-K and @mark may have been there before also. :eek
