Yeah weak field. They’d need someone brand new to the voters, IMO.

I agree and that could make all the difference.
In November of 1990, when someone compiled presidential candidates for 1992, nobody put the governor of Arkansas on the list.
Similarly in November 2014 Trump wouldn’t have shown up on a lot of lists either.

It is kind of a bandwagon thing. Candidates get "lucky", get in the news, which creates more news stories and builds their name recognition and popularity.
Sometimes it doesn't matter how good or bad they are.

It's not easy to be elected president in america. You can't be a minority, you can't be a woman, you can't be gay or transgendered. You can't be developmentally disabled. That leaves like four people, and I'm definitely not running. So that leaves three.

Barack Hussein Obama (again, how did he ever win with that name...considering we just killed Hussein, and were about to kill Osama) was also pretty unknown, at least until the 2004 DNC speech, but still... his momentum in 2007/2008 kind of came out of nowhere.
