I'm fairly sure that the perceived seriousness of the gaffe and its impact on the world in general is in direct proportion to how much we dislike the politician in question.

There's been no shortage of idiotic blunders by leaders of both teams, but the folks that vote for them rarely take them seriously.

I've been less than impressed by Biden. He shouldn't be President. Then again, it wasn't clear to me that Trump was all there, either. Some of those meandering discussions he had with himself during Covid press conferences were a little scary.
