Kind of a sad day

Our 70 year old maple tree is coming down today…

We’re not really sure. I had the arborist last year to do an inspection on it because of a few discolorations in the trunk, they said it was fine, then they proceeded to trim it down waaayyyy too far. A year later we have a big ol mushroom growing out the side… Generally we think there was the beginning of a problem last year that the arborist missed and then exacerbated by trimming way too much off…
I won’t miss the leaves though…
We will buy a young but mature tree in the spring.

Have you considered getting a fake tree instead? A lot cheaper, it won't use up valuable water, and won't shed leaves on your lawn. Also, when you get tired of it, you can replace it for a new one!

That sucks, and yes it sounds like the trimming tried but killed the tree. We have a bunch of maples around our house and they become a bright, fiery orange/red in the fall.

When we bought our house, back in 1984, our front yard had three huge elm trees.
This is the one by the sidewalk.
These two were closer to the house.
You know what happened.
By the way, that elm by the street. The limb to the left was about 24 inches in diameter.

On the plus side, I’m stocked on firewood for next year and the Christmas lights just got A LOT easier.

RIP beautiful maple.
It’s fun watching a tree grow over the years. But once they get a certain size it’s hard to track growth.
It really frosts my cookies to see people cut down mature trees for stupid reasons, especially here, where they’re so hard to grow. Our city does this routinely and it makes many of us so mad. I don’t think the young and woke city raised & schooled developers understand present day historical reasons for shelter belts. -

I don't know, but I think maple would be tough to split. Stack and tarp it after splitting.
You can burn green wood in an open fireplace. Best to mix it with a little bit of dry. It'll be better next year, though.
